How much does a driveway repair cost?

The short answer

Far less than most people assume, and we do not publish a figure because it depends entirely on what caused the fault. A pothole or a settled bay is a short job. The same fault caused by a failing drain or a collapsed base is a different job — which is why the diagnosis comes before the price.

Repairs cover an enormous range, from an hour swapping a few blocks to a day rebuilding a base over a settled trench. What sets the price is not the size of the visible fault but what is underneath it, and that is genuinely not knowable from the pavement. A pothole with clean dry stone under it is quick; the same pothole over saturated, contaminated base is a bigger dig.

There are a few reliable rules of thumb about relative cost, though. Block paving is the cheapest surface to repair by a distance, because the units come up and go back and nothing has to be bought. Gravel is next. Tarmac patching is modest but visible. Resin repairs are more expensive and stay visible. Imprinted concrete cannot be repaired to match at all, which makes any damage to it disproportionately expensive to resolve well.

Repairs are also where the largest saving on this site sits, which is worth saying plainly. Restoring a block drive — clean, re-sand, fix the odd sunken bay and rebuild the edge — costs a small fraction of relaying it, and relaying costs a fraction of replacing it. A great many drives quoted for replacement need one of the two cheaper jobs, and it is worth having someone establish which before spending anything.

What genuinely adds cost is a cause that has to be dealt with first. A drain camera survey and a drain repair where a leaking pipe is washing out the base. A soakaway where the real problem is that water has nowhere to go. Retaining or rebuilding where the ground beside the drive has eroded. In each case the repair without the cause is money spent twice, so it is better to know at the quote stage.

Timing affects value more than price. Tarmac wants warmth, resin and mortar want dry conditions, and material laid into a wet hole in January will not hold. A pothole that is not a trip hazard is genuinely better and cheaper repaired in spring — and any contractor pressing for a repair to be done in bad conditions is prioritising their calendar over your drive.

  • The price depends on the cause, which is why diagnosis comes first
  • Block paving is by far the cheapest surface to repair
  • Imprinted concrete cannot be matched, so damage costs disproportionately
  • Restoring, then relaying, then replacing — in that order of cost
  • Repairs done in poor weather are repairs paid for twice
