Gravel, shingle & stabilised gravel driveways in Macclesfield

Gravel is the cheapest surface to lay, the easiest to drain and the one most often done badly. Tipped straight onto the ground it becomes ruts, mud and a bank of stone at the bottom of the slope inside a year. Built properly — dug out, membraned, a compacted stone base, edges to hold it in and only then the decorative layer — it is a perfectly good, genuinely permeable driveway that suits an older or rural property better than anything shiny.

The single change that transforms a gravel drive is a cellular grid. Interlocking plastic or recycled-plastic panels are laid over the base and filled with gravel so that each cell holds its own stone; the surface then behaves almost like a solid one, does not rut under a turning wheel and does not migrate down a slope. On any drive with a gradient — and there are plenty of those east of the town — a grid is the difference between a gravel drive and a gravel problem.

Self-binding gravel is the other option and it is a different material entirely, not just a different size. It is a graded, clay-bearing aggregate that compacts down into a firm, buff-coloured surface which stays put underfoot rather than scattering. It suits period properties, and it is often what a conservation officer would rather see than black tarmac in front of a listed building.

Permeability is gravel's real advantage and it is worth stating plainly: a properly built gravel drive lets rain soak into the ground where it lands, which normally keeps a front garden inside permitted development without any application at all, and puts nothing extra into a surface-water system that Cheshire East already describes as under pressure in Macclesfield.
