Gravel is the cheapest surface to lay, the easiest to drain and the one most often done badly. It suits period properties, and it is often what a conservation officer would rather see than black tarmac in front of a listed building.

Permeability is gravel's real advantage and it is worth stating plainly: a properly built gravel drive lets rain soak into the ground where it lands, which normally keeps a front garden inside permitted development without any application at all, and puts nothing extra into a surface-water system that Cheshire East already describes as under pressure in Macclesfield.
