Concrete is the strongest driveway surface on this list by a wide margin, and it is the one most often ruined by details. Get the mix, the reinforcement, the thickness and — above all — the joints right and it will outlast everything else on the street. Get the joints wrong and it will crack, because concrete shrinks as it cures and it is going to crack somewhere: joints exist to decide where.

Pattern imprinted concrete is that same slab, coloured and stamped with a texture mat while it is still green, then sealed. Done well it is hard-wearing and holds its shape, with no joints for weeds. It also has two honest drawbacks worth knowing before you commit. It is completely impermeable, so the drainage has to be designed and may need planning permission. And it cannot be repaired invisibly — a patch never matches, so a trench for a new cable or a settled corner is a visible scar for good.

The sealer is the other thing nobody mentions at the quote stage. Imprinted concrete relies on a surface sealer for its colour and its resistance to oil and frost, and that sealer is a consumable — it wears, it dulls, and it typically wants stripping back and recoating every three to five years. Budgeting for that from the start is the difference between a drive that looks good for twenty years and one that looks tired in six.

Exposed aggregate is the quieter option and, on the high ground east of the town, often the more sensible one. The surface is washed back to reveal the stone in the mix, which gives a naturally textured, non-slip finish with no coloured coating to fade and no annual comparison against how it looked when it was new.
