Concrete is the strongest driveway surface there is and the one where the details matter most. A 100–150mm slab on a compacted stone base, with steel mesh reinforcement and joints in the right places, will comfortably outlast every other option here and take loads that would rut tarmac. The same slab without joints, laid too thin or cured badly, will crack in ways that cannot be undone.
The joints are the thing to understand, because they explain everything about how concrete behaves. Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature, and a slab restrained from moving will crack — that is not a defect, it is physics. Control joints, either cut in with a saw within a day of the pour or formed as the slab is laid, create a deliberate weak line so the crack happens where you decided rather than diagonally across the middle. Bay sizes and joint spacing are a design decision, not an afterthought.
Thickness and reinforcement follow the loading. A hundred millimetres over a good sub-base is normal for cars. A drive that takes a motorhome, a horsebox or regular delivery vehicles wants more, and the mesh position matters as much as its presence — mesh lying on the sub-base does nothing, because it needs to sit in the upper part of the slab where the tension is. It gets held up on spacers rather than pulled up with a rake, which is a genuine difference between a good pour and a quick one.
Curing is the invisible half. Fresh concrete needs to retain its moisture while it gains strength, so it is covered or sprayed rather than left to dry out in the sun or freeze overnight. A slab that dries too fast is weaker at the surface and dusts, scales and crazes. In cold weather concrete gains strength very slowly and can be damaged by frost before it has any strength at all — which is why winter pours are planned around the forecast or postponed.
Concrete is completely impermeable, so in a front garden the planning rule applies in full: more than five square metres needs planning permission unless the water is directed to a permeable area within your own property. That normally means a channel drain to a soakaway, or falls to a lawn or border, designed in from the start. It also means the falls have to be right — a concrete drive falling towards the garage will flood the garage, every time, for the next fifty years.
The honest limitation is repairability. A concrete drive cannot be lifted and relaid the way blocks can, and a patch never matches — different cement, different aggregate, different age. So a trench for a cable or a chamber that has to be reached leaves a permanent visible scar. If there is any prospect of needing to dig under the drive, that is worth weighing before choosing concrete, and worth putting a duct in for while it is being built.

How thick should a concrete driveway be?
For cars, 100mm of reinforced concrete over a properly compacted stone sub-base is the normal domestic standard. Heavier or more frequent loading — a motorhome, a horsebox, delivery vehicles — pushes that up, and the sub-base thickens with it. Thickness alone is not the answer either: a thick slab on a poor base still cracks.
Why does concrete crack?
Because it shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature, and a restrained slab has to relieve that stress somewhere. Control joints exist to decide where. A slab poured without joints, or with them cut too late or too far apart, cracks wherever the stress concentrates — usually diagonally and usually visibly. Cracking is not a fault; uncontrolled cracking is.
Can concrete be laid in winter?
It can be, with care, but it is not ideal. Concrete gains strength very slowly in the cold and can be damaged permanently by frost before it has developed any. A responsible contractor watches the forecast, uses protection, and will postpone rather than pour into a hard frost. There is no urgency that justifies pouring on the wrong day.
Can a concrete drive be repaired?
Localised damage can be cut out and replaced, but it will not match — different cement, aggregate and age make a patch visible permanently. Cracks can be routed and sealed. That limited repairability is the main trade-off against concrete's strength, and it is a good reason to lay a duct under a new slab for any future cable or drain run.
