Which type of driveway lasts the longest?
The short answer
Granite setts and properly jointed concrete last longest — decades and, for setts on a mortar bed, effectively a lifetime. Block paving follows at twenty-five years and more, tarmac and resin bound at fifteen to twenty. But build quality beats material comfortably: a well-built tarmac drive outlives a badly built stone one every time.

Answered
Taking the materials at their best, the order is fairly settled. Granite setts on a full mortar bed are effectively permanent — there are nineteenth-century sett surfaces in this part of the country still intact under later layers. Concrete with properly designed joints and reinforcement will run for decades. Block paving with a properly haunched edge gives twenty-five years and more, and the blocks themselves outlive that. Tarmac and resin bound typically give fifteen to twenty, with an overlay extending tarmac considerably.
That order is much less important than it looks, because almost nothing fails for the reason the list implies. Drives fail because the sub-base was thin or compacted in one lift, because the edge was never haunched in concrete, or because water had nowhere to go. Any of those three will finish a granite sett drive well inside twenty years, and their absence will keep a tarmac drive going for thirty.
There is also a difference between how long a surface survives and how long it looks right, and the two diverge most on the decorative options. Pattern imprinted concrete is structurally very durable and depends on a sealer for its appearance, so an unsealed imprinted drive looks tired long before it is worn out. Concrete blocks fade over ten to fifteen years because the pigment sits in a thin surface layer; clay pavers do not fade at all, because the colour is the fired clay.
Exposure matters more here than the national averages suggest. Freeze-thaw is what works cracks open, lifts paving off a wet bed and destroys pointing, and the Met Office records air frost rising from around twenty days a year near the coast to over seventy-five in the higher Pennines — Buxton averages 51.5 against 40.0 at low-lying Woodford. With the ground east of the town rising fast, a drive in Rainow or Kerridge is being worked considerably harder than the same drive in Broken Cross.
The practical conclusion is unglamorous. If longevity is what you are buying, spend the money on the dig, the compaction, the edges and the drainage, and choose whichever surface you like from what is left. That is genuinely the order that produces the longest-lived driveway.
- Setts on a mortar bed: effectively a lifetime
- Concrete with proper joints: decades
- Block paving on a haunched edge: 25 years and more
- Tarmac and resin bound: 15–20 years, longer with an overlay
- Build quality beats material — every time, and not marginally
