Natural stone driveways, setts & flags in Macclesfield
Natural stone is the oldest driveway surface there is and the one with the least margin for error. Stone does not flex, so anything the ground does underneath it shows up in the joints and the levels rather than being absorbed. It also arrives with real variation in thickness and colour, which means it has to be laid by somebody who is prepared to sort it and gauge it as they go rather than take it out of the pack in order.
Setts are the traditional answer for a driveway and still the right one. Granite setts laid on a full mortar bed with the joints properly filled will take vehicle traffic more or less indefinitely — there are streets in this part of Cheshire still on their original setts — and they suit an older stone property in a way that nothing manufactured quite manages. Cropped setts give a rugged, traditional face; sawn setts give a flatter, more contemporary one.
Sandstone and limestone flags are a different proposition on a drive than on a patio. Anything a car parks on wants to be a driveway-grade thickness on a full mortar bed over concrete, not a 22mm patio flag on dabs — that is the single most common reason a stone drive cracks. Thickness and bedding are the questions to ask, not the colour of the sample.
There is a local dimension worth taking seriously here. Macclesfield has conservation areas across the town centre and beyond, and Article 4(2) directions at Christ Church and High Street remove permitted-development rights outright, so what a front hardstanding is surfaced in can become a planning matter rather than a preference. Stone is very often the answer that gets approved where tarmac or concrete would not.
