Is a cheap driveway quote worth taking?

The short answer

Sometimes, and you can tell which by asking two questions: how deep is the dig, and where does the water go. Most large price gaps between quotes are explained by depth, drainage and edge detail — not by one firm being greedy. A cheap price with the same written specification is a genuine saving; a cheap price with no specification is a different job.

Answered

It is worth saying clearly that cheaper is not automatically worse. Overheads, workload, how far a firm is travelling, and whether they are already working nearby all move a price legitimately. A well-established local contractor with a quiet fortnight can be cheaper than a busy one, doing identical work. The problem is that you cannot tell that from the number.

What you can tell it from is the specification. Ask every quote for the excavation depth, the sub-base thickness and compaction method, the edging detail, and the drainage arrangement. If two quotes match on those and one is cheaper, that is a real saving. If the cheaper one cannot or will not give them, the gap is almost certainly the dig — because that is where the money is and it is invisible once the surface is on.

The specific things that get shaved are predictable. A shallower excavation. Sub-base tipped in one lift instead of compacted in layers. No membrane. Edgings bedded on sand rather than concrete-haunched. Water run to the kerb instead of drained properly. A single thin layer of tarmac instead of a binder and a wearing course. Every one of those looks perfect on handover day and shows up within two to five years.

Then there are the cheap quotes that are not quotes at all. The doorstep pattern is unmistakable: an unbooked knock, material supposedly left over from a job nearby, a price good only today, cash preferred, and a crew who can start straight away. Every element is a warning. Tarmac is bought hot against a booked job and is unusable within hours — there is no spare load going round looking for a home.

There is a legal protection worth knowing about here. Any contract agreed at your own door for more than £42 carries a 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and the trader must give you written notice of it. Failing to do so is a criminal offence and extends your cancellation right by up to a year. The pressure to decide today exists precisely because that paperwork is the thing they do not want you holding.

  • Cheaper is not automatically worse — but the specification tells you which
  • Ask every quote for depth, compaction, edging and drainage
  • A gap with no specification behind it is almost always the dig
  • Doorstep 'leftover tarmac' is never genuine
  • Doorstep contracts over £42 carry a written 14-day cancellation right
