What should a driveway quote include?
The short answer
The excavation depth, the sub-base thickness and how it is compacted, the edging detail, the drainage arrangement, what happens to the spoil, and the surface specification with thicknesses. A quote that gives a rate per square metre and none of that is not telling you what you are buying.

Answered
Most of the value in a driveway is buried, so the only way to compare two prices is to compare what is going under the ground. Ask for the excavation depth in millimetres, the sub-base material and compacted thickness, and confirmation that it is laid and compacted in layers rather than one lift. Those three lines explain nearly every price difference between two otherwise similar quotes.
Then the edges, which are structural rather than decorative. The quote should say what the edging is and — crucially — that it is set on a concrete bed with a concrete haunch behind it. An edging bedded on sand looks identical on the day and is the single most common reason a block drive spreads and a tarmac drive crumbles.
Drainage next, and in a front garden this is a legal matter as well as a practical one. The quote should say where the water goes: a permeable build-up, a channel to a soakaway, or falls to a lawn or border. If it is silent, ask — because a solid front-garden surface draining to the kerb needs planning permission, and it is the homeowner who owns that problem.
Waste is the line that says a lot about the firm. Several tonnes of controlled waste leave a driveway job, and it must go with a carrier registered with the Environment Agency, with a waste transfer note. Ask for the carrier registration number. A proper firm produces it without hesitation; fly-tipped spoil gets traced back to the address it came from, and it is the householder who ends up explaining it.
Finally, the paperwork around the deal itself. A written quote rather than a verbal figure, clear about what is and is not included. Payment terms with no large cash deposit up front. Public liability insurance you can see the certificate for. And, if the contract is agreed at your door rather than at a business premises, written notice of your 14-day right to cancel — which is a legal requirement for off-premises contracts over £42, and its absence tells you a great deal.
