Block paving is what is called a flexible pavement, and understanding that explains everything about how it behaves. The blocks are not fixed down. They sit on a thin bed of sharp sand, are vibrated in, and are locked together by the friction of dry sand packed tight into every joint. Load goes into a block, spreads through the joints into its neighbours, and down into the base. Take away the tight joints or the restrained perimeter and that interlock stops working — which is why an unrestrained block drive goes wavy and a well-restrained one stays flat for decades.
The build-up is the same as any other drive up to the last two layers. Excavate to formation — normally around 200–250mm below finished level for a car, more on soft ground. Geotextile membrane where the subgrade needs it. Compacted crushed-stone sub-base laid and whacked in layers. Then a screeded 30–40mm laying course of sharp sand, which is a bedding layer and not a levelling layer, and finally the blocks themselves laid to a consistent bond.
The edge course is the single most important detail on the job and the one most often skimped. Every free edge — the road side, the lawn side, around the house, around any island — needs an edging or kerb sitting on a concrete bed with a haunch of concrete up the back of it. That haunch is what resists the sideways push from the paving and from turning wheels. An edging bedded on sand looks identical on handover day and is visibly leaning outward inside three years, with the whole drive loosening behind it.
The laying pattern matters more than most people expect. Herringbone at 45 or 90 degrees is the strongest bond for a trafficked area because no continuous joint line runs in the direction of travel, so wheels cannot creep the blocks along. Stretcher bond and basketweave are fine for a patio or a footpath and are noticeably weaker under a car. Where the drive is a turning area or takes a heavier vehicle, herringbone is the correct answer rather than a stylistic one.
Jointing is the last operation and the one that finishes the job structurally. Kiln-dried sand is brushed in and the whole surface is vibrated with a plate compactor over a protective mat, then topped up and vibrated again until no joint takes any more. Blocks that have been laid but not properly jointed and vibrated are not yet a pavement — they are a very neat pile of blocks. A drive left un-jointed over a wet weekend loses its bedding sand out of the joints and starts moving before it has been driven on.
Two long-term advantages are worth stating because they rarely come up at the quote stage. Block paving is the only common driveway surface that can be repaired invisibly, so a settled bay, a new duct or an inspection chamber that has to be reached costs a day rather than a scar. And permeable block paving — wider joints filled with clean grit over an open-graded base — keeps a front garden inside permitted development with no application and no separate drainage works.

Common questions
How long does block paving last?
Twenty-five years and more is entirely normal for a drive with a proper base and a properly haunched edge, and the blocks themselves outlive that. What fails is almost never the blocks — it is the restraint, the jointing sand or the base beneath. That is also why a block drive is worth restoring rather than replacing far more often than people assume.
Why herringbone rather than a straight pattern?
Because herringbone has no continuous joint running in the direction the wheels travel, so the blocks cannot creep along a line. It is measurably the strongest bond for vehicle traffic. Stretcher bond and basketweave are perfectly good on a patio or path and noticeably weaker under a car, particularly where vehicles turn.
Will weeds grow in the joints?
Seeds blow in and germinate in the surface of the jointing sand — they are not growing up from the base. Full, well-compacted joints give them very little to root into, and a stabilising sand or a sealer reduces it further. Empty joints are the real problem: they let weeds and moss in and, more importantly, they mean the paving has lost its interlock.
Can I have block paving and avoid planning permission?
