Do you charge for a quote?

The short answer

No. The visit, the look at the site and the written quote are free, and there is no obligation either way. You are not tied in by asking, and nobody will keep ringing you if the answer turns out to be no.

Answered

The quote is free because it has to be — you cannot sensibly price a driveway without seeing the ground, the access, the levels and where the water currently goes, and charging to establish that would simply mean fewer people asking. So somebody comes out, looks properly, and puts a price in writing.

What you get from that visit is more than a number. It should include the excavation depth, the sub-base specification, the edging detail and the drainage arrangement, because those are what you are actually buying and what lets you compare one quote against another. A price with none of that behind it is not much use to anybody.

There is no obligation and no pressure attached to it. If the price is more than you wanted, or you want to think about it, or you get three quotes and go elsewhere, that is entirely normal and nobody will chase you about it. A quote that expires today, or a discount that only applies if you sign now, is a sales technique rather than a commercial reality.

Occasionally a job needs something that genuinely costs money to establish — a drain camera survey where a defective drain is suspected, or a percolation test to size a soakaway. Those get discussed and agreed before they happen rather than appearing on an invoice. The quoting visit itself is free regardless.

One thing worth being straight about: your details go to a single local contractor and nowhere else. This is not a site that sells enquiries to a list of firms, so asking for a quote does not result in a week of phone calls from strangers. One call back, from the people who would do the work.

  • Free visit, free written quote, no obligation either way
  • The quote should state depths, edging and drainage, not just a price
  • No expiring discounts and no pressure to sign on the day
  • Anything that genuinely costs to investigate is agreed first
  • Your details go to one contractor, never to a list
